Yosemite Valley View Fine Art Paper Print
Snow on the boulders of the Merced, with El Capitan on the left and Cathedral Rocks standing over the far end of the valley — Yosemite on a winter morning after a storm had cleared. Overnight the snow had grown a coat of feathered crystals: surface hoar, which forms only on cold, still, humid nights and lasts until the first wind or direct sun finds it. I worked low and close to the water to keep that texture in the near frame.
Valley View puts two very different clocks in a single frame. The granite is roughly 100 million years old, cooled miles underground and later lifted and stripped bare; glaciers grinding through the valley in the ice ages squared off its sides and left El Capitan's face standing about 3,000 feet (900 m) above the river. The crystals in the foreground took one night to build and were gone by afternoon.
A note on presentation: black-and-white landscape has traditionally lived on paper, where tone and texture carry the image rather than surface reflectance. This is that tradition; the three papers differ in how much texture and sheen they bring to it.
Fine Art Paper — Canson Platine Fibre Rag holds the deep blacks in the trees while keeping detail in the snow, closest of the three to a traditional large-format winter print. Canson Arches BFK Rives White gives a softer, more painterly reading; Moab Silver Metallic heightens contrast and lends the lit snow a pearlescent shimmer. Prints are trimmed borderless at the stated size. 8x12 inches and smaller ship flat; larger sizes ship rolled, and are supplied unframed.
Every fine art paper print carries a 1-inch white border for handling and framing, added outside the image dimensions shown. The exception is the largest size in each aspect ratio, where the paper is already at its maximum width: those are printed borderless, edge to edge at the size shown.
