First light on the Mesquite Flat dunes, Death Valley. At sunrise the sun comes in almost horizontally and every ridge throws its own shadow; an hour later the same dunes read as flat and featureless. This is the window.
Made with a 300mm lens, which is what stacks the frame the way it does — the telephoto compresses depth, pulling the Grapevine Mountains forward until they sit almost against the dunes rather than miles beyond them. The result is two opposed textures held in a single plane. Below: sand, smooth and continuously reshaped, its crests picked out in a bright line where the light catches. Above: rock eroded into a dense pattern of ridge and gully that changes on a scale of geological time. The softest surface in the valley set against the hardest, and the fastest-changing against the slowest.
A note on presentation: black-and-white landscape has traditionally lived on paper, where tone and texture carry the image rather than surface reflectance. This is that tradition; the three papers differ in how much texture and sheen they bring to it.
Fine Art Paper — Canson Arches BFK Rives White is the traditional choice, its velvety matte surface giving the sand a tactile softness close to a darkroom print. Canson Platine Fibre Rag offers a smoother lustre with deeper blacks; Moab Silver Metallic heightens contrast and lends the lit crests a pearlescent shimmer. Prints are trimmed borderless at the stated size. 8x12 inches and smaller ship flat; larger sizes ship rolled, and are supplied unframed.
Every fine art paper print carries a 1-inch white border for handling and framing, added outside the image dimensions shown. The exception is the largest size in each aspect ratio, where the paper is already at its maximum width: those are printed borderless, edge to edge at the size shown.
