A shaft of light filters down through the sculpted sandstone walls of Antelope Canyon, catching dust thrown up by guides and the footfall of visitors moving through the slot. For a few seconds, the light shaped that dust into a ghostly white figure standing on the canyon floor — a phantom that formed, held, and was gone. Captured in 2011, on Navajo land near Page, Arizona.
Antelope Canyon is photographed by thousands of people every year. The beams are a matter of season and hour; this apparition lasted only moments. The image is built on contrast — cool violet shadow against the canyon's fired orange, and at its centre a column of pure white light.
